KDE Ships July Updates

KDE has released updates for its Workspaces, Applications, and Development Platform, the fourth in a series of monthly stabilization updates to the 4.6 series. 4.6.5 updates bring many bugfixes and translation updates on top of the latest edition in the 4.6 series. These updates are recommended for everyone running 4.6.4 or earlier versions. As the release only contains bugfixes and translation updates, it will be a safe and pleasant update for everyone.


KDE Ships First 4.7 Release Candidate

KDE has released a first release candidate of the upcoming 4.7 release of the Plasma Desktop and Netbook workspaces, the KDE Applications and the KDE Frameworks, which is planned for July 27, 2011. With API, dependency and feature freezes in place, the KDE team's focus is now on fixing last-minute bugs and completing translations and documentation.

The 4.7 release will bring a number of exciting improvements:

  • KWin, Plasma's window manager now supports OpenGL-ES 2.0, improving performance and deployability on mobile devices
  • Dolphin, KDE's flexible file manager has seen user interface improvements and now sports a better user experience for searching in files' metadata.
  • KDM, KDE's login manager now interfaces with the Grub2 bootloader
  • Marble, the virtual globe now supports offline address search, especially making its mobile version more useful on the road

June 10, 2011. KDE is proud to announce the release of the next generation Kontact Suite, based on the Akonadi framework. In addition to this, we are also proud to announce the June maintenance update of the KDE Software Compilation 4.6. Unsurprisingly, the port of Kontact to Akonadi is finally being released the same day as Duke Nukem Forever, making it relatively timely.

Desktop Summit Team Unveils Exciting Program of Talks

The Desktop Summit is a joint conference organized by the GNOME and KDE communities, the two dominant forces behind modern graphical software on free platforms. Over a thousand international participants are expected to attend. The main conference takes place from 6-8 August. The annual membership meetings of GNOME and KDE are scheduled for 9 August, followed by workshops and coding sessions on 10-12 August.

The Desktop Summit Team is now pleased to announce this year's program of talks.


Google Summer of Code Projects Accepted & the Return of Season of KDE

The KDE community is excited to accept 51 students into the Google Summer of Code program this year. Their projects will touch KDE on almost every level, and integrate the students into our community. Some are likely to become longtime KDE contributors. The next month will be spent on community bonding, getting to know the people and the code behind the project they'll be working on. From May 23rd until the end of August, they'll be working with their mentors to complete their own projects.

The changelog tells us that this update is worth installing for the fixes in Okular, Dolphin and Kopete, among others. 4.6.2 is a recommended update for everyone running 4.6.1 or earlier versions.
